JAMB Agricultural Science past questions

Agricultural Science looks friendly. Many candidates grew up around farms, so the subject feels familiar before revision even starts. The exam punishes that comfort. How Agricultural Science is scored in the UTME

Agricultural Science carries 40 of the UTME's 180 questions, the same as every subject apart from Use of English, which has 60. At roughly 2.22 marks per question, it is worth about 89 of the total 400 marks, and a well-paced candidate gives it 25 to 30 minutes of the two-hour exam.

Most of the paper is recall with a practical flavour: name the implement, identify the deficiency symptom, pick the correct planting practice, match the breed to the animal. A handful of questions lean on simple applied reasoning, working out why a practice is done or what follows from a soil property, but nothing requires calculation beyond basic arithmetic. Pace, as usual, comes from preparation.

There is no negative marking in the UTME, so answer everything. An eliminated option or two turns a guess into decent odds, and a blank earns nothing at all.

Terminology and specimens decide marks

Here is the trap that catches candidates who "know farming". The exam asks for the implement used for the secondary tillage operation that breaks clods and levels the seedbed. The everyday answer is "we use a hoe for that". The exam wants the harrow, distinguished from the plough beside it in the options. It asks which soil layer is the zone of leaching, which propagation method suits cassava, and which nutrient deficiency shows as yellowing between leaf veins. General farm experience does not supply those answers. The textbook's exact vocabulary does.

Specimen and diagram recognition is the same skill in visual form. Agricultural Science papers routinely describe or show a tool, a soil profile, a part of an animal, or a pest, and ask you to identify it or state its use. When you revise, revise with the figures: cover the labels in your textbook diagrams and name the parts from memory, then check. Do the same for the common farm tools and implements, the breeds of cattle, sheep, goats and poultry in the syllabus, and the major pests. Ten minutes with labelled diagrams beats an hour of prose for this class of question.

A useful practice habit: keep a running two-column list, everyday word on the left, textbook term on the right. "Big hoe" becomes "ridger". "Fowl house" becomes "deep litter system". The right-hand column is what the exam is written in.

A smaller bank, used honestly

  • Skipping the diagrams. Tools, soil profiles, animal parts and pests are tested by recognition. Prose-only revision leaves those marks on the table.
  • Vague soil knowledge. Soils is the heavyweight cluster. Know the properties of each soil type, the horizons in order, and the named methods of conservation, not a general sense of "erosion is bad".
  • Ignoring economics and extension. Candidates drill crops and animals and abandon land tenure, farm records and extension methods. Those questions still come, and they are easy marks for anyone who read the chapter.
  • Learning practices without their order. Pre-planting, planting and post-planting operations are tested as a sequence. Know which operation belongs to which stage.
  • Treating a question bank as the whole syllabus. With 320 questions, gaps are certain. Let the syllabus set your topic list and the bank test it.

Working past papers year by year

Timed, complete papers remain the best rehearsal, and Agricultural Science rewards them the usual way: weighting becomes visible (you will feel how much soils and crop production dominate), pace becomes automatic, and question shapes become familiar. Review every miss against the textbook, and every guess too, because a lucky guess unreviewed is a mark you will not get twice.

And ignore anyone offering "expo" or "runs" for the exam. They are scams, every one, and candidates lose money and sometimes their registration chasing them. The repetition in real past questions is the only legitimate preview there is, and it is free.
