JAMB Economics past questions
Economics is the subject that surprises candidates twice. First surprise: it is not a pure reading subject. Every paper carries real calculations and graph questions. Second surprise: the theory questions are not free marks either, because the options are built from the same near-identical definitions. This guide covers what repeats, how the calculations work, and how to stop tables and diagrams eating your time.
How Economics is scored in the UTME
Economics carries 40 of the UTME's 180 questions. The same as every subject except Use of English, which has 60. At roughly 2.22 marks per question, that makes the subject worth about 89 of the 400 marks, and a well-paced candidate gives it 25 to 30 minutes.
Inside those 40 questions sit two different exams. Most questions are theory, definitions, features, causes and effects, and reward the same precise recall as any Arts subject. But a meaningful handful in every paper are quantitative: an elasticity to compute, a national-income figure to derive, a cost schedule or demand table to read. Candidates who prepared for the theory exam alone meet the quantitative questions cold and either burn five minutes or surrender the marks.
Plan for both exams. And because JAMB has no negative marking, a calculation you cannot finish should still end in an educated guess, never a blank.
The topics JAMB repeats every year
The Economics syllabus looks long, but past papers reveal a stable core. Work ten years of questions and these clusters appear relentlessly:

Use the table as triage: any row you cannot summarise from memory is a row that needs question drilling, not another read-through.
The calculation questions
The quantitative side of UTME Economics is narrower than candidates fear. Nearly all of it comes from three families:
- Elasticity. Percentage change in quantity demanded divided by percentage change in price (or income, for income elasticity; or the price of another good, for cross elasticity). JAMB gives you the before-and-after numbers; the marks are for setting the fraction up the right way and interpreting the result, greater than 1 elastic, less than 1 inelastic, negative cross elasticity meaning complements.
- National income arithmetic. You are given a short list, GDP, net factor income from abroad, depreciation, indirect taxes, subsidies, and asked for GNP, NNP or income at factor cost. These are pure add-and-subtract questions once you know which item moves which way.
- Schedules and tables. A cost schedule where you compute average or marginal cost at some output; a demand-and-supply table where you find the equilibrium price; a marginal-utility table where you find the consumer's stopping point.
Two practical points. First, the real CBT provides an on-screen calculator, but most Economics arithmetic is deliberately light, and setting up the formula correctly matters far more than the keying. Second, these families are so standardised that after ten years of past papers you will have solved each one a dozen times. On exam day they should feel like admin, not algebra.
The formula test: if you cannot write the elasticity formula and the GNP-to-NNP adjustment from memory right now, on paper, you have not finished preparing for Economics. No matter how well you know the theory.
Graphs and tables under time pressure
Diagram and table questions are where pacing collapses. A candidate on 45 seconds per question meets a demand-supply diagram and spends the first 40 seconds just orienting. Train the orientation until it is automatic:
- Read the axes first, always. Price against quantity? Cost against output? Ten seconds on the axes saves thirty seconds of confusion.
- Know the standard pictures cold. Downward-sloping demand, upward-sloping supply, the equilibrium cross, a shift versus a movement along, the U-shaped average cost curve, the production possibility curve. UTME diagrams are drawn from a small standard set, recognition, not analysis, is the skill.
- For tables, find what the question wants before reading every cell. If it asks for equilibrium price, scan for the row where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. You rarely need the rest of the table.
- Flag and move. A table question you cannot crack in 90 seconds gets a best guess and a flag. It is worth the same 2.22 marks as the definition question two screens later.
Common mistakes in JAMB Economics
- Preparing for a reading subject. Notes and definitions cover perhaps three-quarters of the paper. The calculations and diagrams decide whether your score is decent or excellent, and they are the part re-reading cannot teach.
- Memorising formulas without direction. Elasticity questions are mostly lost by inverting the fraction or mixing up which change is the "cause". Practise until the setup is reflex.
- Confusing near-neighbour terms. Balance of trade vs balance of payments; economic growth vs economic development; movement along a curve vs a shift of the curve; GDP vs GNP. JAMB builds options from exactly these pairs.
- Ignoring the Nigerian-economy topics. Agriculture, industrialisation and petroleum feel "too general" to revise, yet they turn up every year with very learnable answers.
- Skipping diagram practice. If your practice material never shows you a curve or a schedule, your first table under a live timer will be in the exam hall.
- Practising untimed. The mix of quick theory and slower calculations makes pacing the core Economics skill, and pacing only develops against a clock.
Working past papers year by year
Complete papers, worked year by year, matter more in Economics than in most subjects, for one reason: the blend. Only a full paper trains you to switch between a definition, an elasticity computation and a cost table in consecutive questions, which is exactly what the real thing does. Aim for at least ten years of papers. Review every miss and every lucky guess, and keep a short list of which calculation family cost you time. That list, not your general feeling about Economics, is next week's study plan.
