JAMB Geography past questions
Geography sits between the Arts and the sciences, and the UTME paper shows it. Half the questions are recall: belts, rocks, climates, minerals. The other half make you work: read a contour map, convert a scale, turn degrees of longitude into hours of time. Candidates who prepare it as a reading subject get ambushed by the practical half. This guide covers what repeats, the calculations you must be able to do half-asleep, and the Nigeria questions that return every single year.
How Geography is scored in the UTME
Geography carries 40 of the UTME's 180 questions, the same as every subject except Use of English, which carries 60. At roughly 2.22 marks per question, that puts about 89 of the total 400 marks on the paper. In a well-paced two-hour exam, give it 25 to 30 minutes.
Budget that time unevenly. A recall question ("the instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure is") should take fifteen seconds. A calculation question (local time at 45°E when it is noon at Greenwich) takes a minute if the method is automatic and three if it is not. The candidates who finish comfortably are the ones who take the recall marks at speed and spend the savings on the practical questions. There is no negative marking, so an answer, even a guessed one, always beats a blank.

Map reading and the calculations
Practical geography is where this subject separates candidates, because the questions cannot be answered by recognition. Four methods cover nearly all of it, and each one should be drilled until it runs without thought:
- Scale conversion. A ratio scale of 1:50,000 means 1 cm on the map is 50,000 cm on the ground, which is 0.5 km, so 2 cm represents 1 km. JAMB moves between ratio scales, statement scales and linear scales, and asks you to convert distance measured on the map into kilometres on the ground.
- Gradient. Gradient is vertical rise over horizontal distance, in the same units. Two points at 600 m and 200 m, separated by 2 km horizontally, give 400 over 2,000, a gradient of 1 in 5. The distractors come from mixing metres with kilometres, so convert first, always.
- Time from longitude. The earth turns 15 degrees per hour, so each degree is 4 minutes, and places east of you are ahead. When it is noon at Greenwich, a town at 30°E reads 2:00 pm. This question is so regular it is practically a standing appointment.
- Contour interpretation. Closely spaced contours mean steep land; widely spaced mean gentle. A round hill closes into rings; a valley shows contours bending uphill; a spur bends downhill. Questions describe or sketch a pattern and ask what feature it shows, or whether two points on the map can see each other.
A useful practice habit: keep a page with just these four methods and one worked example of each. Rework the examples from scratch once a week until exam day. Ten minutes a week keeps four near-guaranteed questions permanently in your pocket.
The Nigeria questions come every year
Whatever else changes, the Nigerian material returns. Every paper reaches for it, and it rewards specific knowledge, not general impressions. The core set:
- Minerals and their locations. Coal at Enugu, tin and columbite on the Jos Plateau, limestone at Nkalagu and Ewekoro, iron ore at Itakpe, crude oil and gas in the Niger Delta. Mineral-location questions are the most reliable Nigeria questions in the subject.
- Vegetation belts in order. From the coast northwards: mangrove and freshwater swamp, rainforest, guinea savanna, sudan savanna, sahel. Questions ask what grows where, and which belt matches which rainfall total.
- Cash crops and their regions. Cocoa in the southwest, oil palm in the southeast, groundnut and cotton in the north, rubber in the mid-west. The old export pyramids may be history, but the crop map is still exam material.
- Rivers and relief. The Niger and the Benue meeting at Lokoja, the Niger Delta, the Jos and Mambilla highlands. Drainage and relief questions assume you can place these without a map in front of you.
- Environmental problems by region. Desertification in the far north, gully erosion in the southeast, coastal and river flooding in the south and along the Niger and Benue. JAMB pairs each problem with its region and its remedies.
Treat this list the way Government candidates treat their constitutional timeline: a small, closed set of facts that converts directly into marks, year after year.
Common mistakes in JAMB Geography
- Preparing it as a pure reading subject. The practical questions are a large, predictable slice of the paper, and no amount of note-reading answers a gradient question for you.
- Not converting units before calculating. Metres mixed with kilometres is the single biggest source of wrong gradient and scale answers, and the wrong figure is always waiting in the options.
- Reversing east and west in time questions. East is ahead, west is behind. Decide it calmly in practice, not freshly in the hall.
- Confusing weathering with erosion. Weathering breaks rock down in place; erosion picks it up and moves it. One word, one mark, most years.
- Learning Nigeria vaguely. "Tin is in the north somewhere" fails; the option list will offer four northern locations. Learn the exact places.
- Practising without a timer. The pace target is 40 questions in 25 to 30 minutes with calculations inside it. Rehearse that, do not assume it.
- Paying for "expo" or "runs". They are scams. The recycled topics above are the only preview of the paper that actually exists.
Working past papers year by year
Geography's mix of recall and method makes full papers, worked year by year, the most efficient revision there is:
- They expose the balance. You feel how many questions each paper gives to practical work, to physical geography and to Nigeria, and you stop over-revising your favourite topics.
- They drill the four methods under time. Scale, gradient, time and contours only become fast through timed repetition.
- They teach the question shapes. "The closeness of contours indicates", "if the local time at X is", "the mineral mined at Y is": a few years of papers and every shape is familiar.
Work at least ten years of papers before exam day, and read the explanation on every miss, especially the calculation misses, where the explanation is the method itself.
